XP !! WO ! build to last forever

It’s a long time since i am working with various ibm/lenovo thinkpads, and a consideration broke in my mind from a layer of inconsciusness i wasn’t aware of.

Suddendly i stopped myself from reading python documentation and realized that i was right.

Lenovo’ s battery quality it’s goin’ worse every year.

I am not polite (usually). I may be diplomatic, but usually i am harsh. Lenovo: your batteries sucks. And i am complaining about battery life. Here are my very small numbers.
We bought for our employers:

4 T61
2 3000 N100
1 3000 N200
1 3000 V100

And in 1 year we have changed (in guarantee):

3 T61 batteries
2 3000 N100 batteries

That makes 5 out of 8 batteries broken in less than a year. I don’ t know if this is a defect from battery maker or cheap product (T61 its top line in lenovo’s laptop performance) but it’s not in line with the image of a tecnology leader and innovator such aThinkpad laptop deserve to be.

Update on the new server:

It works flawlessly with 50 Gigs of ram and 4 cpu (8 cores), only if i don’t populate cpu0′ s ram.
I’ ve tested the system with ubuntu Hardy heron and it works well, it seems fully recognized (maybe the volari video card has some problem, but this isn’ t a matter to me).

I am waiting for an answer from usa about the kingston ram that it is not working in the right way, they are thinking about a switch with APT. Maybe apt it’s it in armony with the rest of my software of choice. just kidding… anyway i didn’t thought a ram should be so problematic.

Yesterday arrived my new server. The setup i’ ve choosen is based upon 8 AMD Opteron CPU’s and glued together with the mighty tyan S4985+M4985. Here is some spec:

Cpu: 8 AMD dual core Model 8220
Mobo: Tyan S4985+M4985
RAM: 128 GB of ECC Kingston (KVR667D2D4P5K2) ( yes 128 )
Hard disks: 8 750 GB Seagate 7200.11 ( yes 8 )

It’s a real monster, or better should be a real monster. Indeed it doesn’ t boot. The first run was made with a single cpu (obviously on socket 0) and 4 GB of ram, later i’ ve tried with the full setup but with any changes.  It doesn’t initialate keybord and video and the only error code taht i’ m getting it’s a very short “beep” immediately after i’ ve pressed the power botton. I’ m reading a “2C”.

Yesterday i’ ve found in a local store Warcraft III sold at 9,90€: for me a sort of magnetic attraction. Today i will try the installation in my ubuntu 7.10 box.

It’ s not a secret that i am a gnome-zealot.

I like the interface and the philosophy behind this DE. I like it’ s integration (or the lack of…) and many software that is gnome-centric. Of course i have some rants, but… who cares ? it’s gnome !

Yesterday i’ ve tried another DE: Xfce 4, my last run with this gorgeous desktop was something like 3 years ago; and since then it made HUGE advancements. It’ s lighter than gnome but capable of delivering a complete environment.

Xfce is crafted on iron, believe me !

But…

The lack of more integration, my habit of a desktop like the “home folder” and the whole set of gnome software (starting from evolution) brought me home. I like gnome, even with all its drawbacks: taking me to another place will be a struggle

Just as a reminder:

Ubuntu selet automatically the wrong driver for Espon Stylus D92, the right driver is the D68 one, not the D88. This is not the only “bug” in default ubuntu installation, one of the last i’ ve discovered it in 7.10 and regards ttf-opensymbol which is installed with folders “in the future” of about 30 minutes. If you upgrade immediately you have an error: solution ?  Take a cofee and wait a minute
